Censorship: The Subject of the Year

The Censoring Continues, It Must End

Censorship appears to be the hot topic of 2018. The endless war to strip us of our first amendment right has not only continued, but it has escalated. When are we going to put a stop to this? More importantly, how do we stop it? Social media has devolved into a sea of acronyms and code words in an attempt to avoid censorship. If we admit it, half of us do not know how to decode these posts. If we do not find a solution to this problem, everything will be written in acronyms. A new language may have to be developed to communicate online. We should not stand for this!

Most social media sites state that they are a place for “free speech.” However, when you write an opinion that does not fall in line with their “lean,” all of the sudden you find yourself suspended, or worse, banned. Things that one would think would result in a suspension, such as graphic language, does not seem to trigger even a slap on the wrist yet post one thing that would serve to discredit the narrative of “their side” and the ban appears almost instantly. The censorship does not only come from the top. There are social media users who are deleting comments that they do not agree with. How can we call for free speech and demand the end of censorship if we take it upon ourselves to remove what someone else said, even if it may be something we do not agree with. Everyone must be able to have a voice. It is imperative for the individuals that have not made up their minds on issues to be able to make an informed decision, and that means hearing both sides.

Welcome to the Echo Chamber

One site, in particular, a subreddit titled “Late Stage Capitalism” is a self-proclaimed “safe space” for liberals. One does not have to look far to see the admissions of censorship of anything that does not agree with their narrative.
Please remember that this subreddit is a safe space for leftist discussion. Any liberalism, capitalist apologia, or attempts to debate socialism will be met with an immediate ban. Take it to r/debatecommunism. Bigotry, ableism and hate speech will also be met with immediate bans; socialism is an intrinsically inclusive system.
What does this translate to? In layman’s terms, their “safe space” shields them from ever having to deal with opposing opinions by deleting anything that disagrees with their beliefs. The danger in this kind of liberal utopia is that many people are never exposed to different opinions. The result is an echo chamber of “leftists” who validate their opinions by surrounding themselves only with people who think the same. This is where opinion starts to be accepted as fact. Censorship of any kind, but especially at this level, destroys the sanctity of truth. Facts become subjective. Definitions of words get distorted.

When you look at the effects of censorship and realize how powerful they are, you can then understand why liberals are trying so hard to censor conservatives on social media. The mainstream media wants to control the narrative. How can they continue to have a stronghold in people’s minds if they are exposed to different thoughts and opinions online? This is the very reason that the media, and all liberals, hate President Trump tweeting. Trump gets around them and takes his message straight to the people. Democrats are in panic mode trying desperately to distract and deflect. From Russia collusion to Stormy Daniels, there is nothing they will not try to keep peoples attention on them and not the message that our President is trying to deliver.

Free Speech Should Include Everyone

Social media sites that claim to support “free speech” apparently need to be taught what those words mean. Free speech does mean shutting down the voices of those that do not agree with you. The first amendment exists to protect our right to say what we want. It does not discriminate against the type of speech used. The first amendment protects all types of speech, regardless if it offends or hurts feelings.

However, the question remains- how do we put an end to censorship? The answer is to never be silent. The goal of censorship to silence our voice. To hide opposing information and thoughts, to control the narrative. Do not let anyone silence your voice. The way to defeat censorship is to be heard and to continue to expose any form of censorship you find. Continue to be vocal, speak up and speak out. The only way for Democrats to truly control the narrative is if we allow them to take our voices. The answer is not to create an echo chamber of our own, where we are only speaking to people of the same mindset. We must remain vigilant and continue to spread the truth and fight against the indoctrination of our nation.

Rene' Rights / Writer

I am an instinctual writer. From penning Haiku as a teen to taking a couple writing classes in college, I have always sought to express myself through the written word. Now that I enjoy early retirement, I turn to every platform I can to support President Trump’s agenda.
