The War on the Second Amendment

Defending the Second Amendment

The Second Amendment, at its core, is about freedom for the citizens of the United States of America. It reads:
A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the rights of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
However you choose to interpret the intention of the Founding Fathers, the fact remains that they believed that every citizen has a right to choose to be armed or not, and that government could not infringe on that right.

The Second Amendment has been argued and upheld in the highest court in the country. It was created for the protection of law-abiding citizens and ensures their right to bear arms. As recently as 2008, the Supreme Court in the landmark case District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 held that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a Militia.

Now More Than Ever

Today, a Militia may seem like an outdated concept to many. However, it is more relevant than ever. This country is in a state of a deep political divide. The level of distrust is on the rise both with Republicans and Democrats.

The Democratic response has been to have more governmental control, censorship, misinterpretation of laws or disregard them altogether, and repealing an amendment to the Constitution. There is an apparent disconnect between the government and the people. Look no further than the election of Donald Trump, a non-politician, to be the country’s leader.

Even with his election, it has only brought to light the level of corruption in our government and spotlighted the Liberal agenda which includes the desire to disarm law abiding citizens. This is frightening to many Conservatives who believe the Second Amendment to be their last defense should this corrupt government try to overreach their authority.

How Can This Happen?

Everyday people question why law-abiding gun owners are being persecuted for the acts of mentally unstable people. The question on everyone’s mind is whether or not the blame should lie with the criminals. Moreover, a prevailing question is whether law enforcement should be given the tools to keep the guns out of the hands of criminals. Why are the rights of criminals more important than the rights of law-abiding citizens?

A troubling thought is that a person who has been shown to be unstable is protected by privacy laws, allowed to purchase a weapon, able to put on social media intent to commit a crime and nothing be done. How can a state pass a law that says if a law- abiding citizen legally purchases a legal weapon it must be forfeited, or the owner face a fine?

The List of Questions is Endless

The American public watches daily the corruption of their elected officials that go unpunished. At the same time, law-abiding citizens are expected to give up a right that could ultimately protect them.

The Federal Government must be kept in check and even the thought of a Militia to stand against them helps to accomplish that. America was created to allow its citizens to live free from a tyrannical government. An armed Militia is the last line of defense for its citizens. Law abiding citizens should never be left defenseless while the government slowly strips their Constitutional rights away.

It seems that our own elected officials do not listen to the concerns of their constituents. They are more preoccupied with their political agenda than representing the will of the people who put them there. We the People cannot possibly be expected to turn over our arms, a right that men and women have fought and died for since the Revolutionary War. The Second Amendment is a right protected by the Constitution, designed to protect the freedom of every American citizen. Now, more than ever, the ability of the American people to defend themselves, their families, homes, and freedom is essential.
