Make Up Your Mind: Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Politics

Image from ABC News

No True Scotsman

In August, Aerosmith lead vocalist, Steven Tyler, sent a second cease and desist letter to President Trump telling the President to stop playing his songs at political rallies. The President responded with the claim that he had purchased the right to use Aerosmith’s songs. After several left-leaning articles colored the move anti-Trump, on Tyler’s part, he found himself under attack by right-wingers claiming to be longstanding Aerosmith fans.

True fans wonder how those claiming to be Aerosmith fans do not know that Steven Tyler has never publicly participated in politics. In fact, if you google Steven Tyler’s politics, you will find that no one knows where he stands. All that is known about him is that he is a conservative, and he is a registered Republican.

Twitter Never Lets It Die

Although the controversy over Tyler’s demands started earlier in the year, the above links are more recent. This madness keeps being perpetuated by a never-ending echo chamber of disgruntled right-wingers, who conveniently forgot their reaction to the degrading of singer Taylor Swift for her own nonpolitical stance. It seems the left is not the only side which struggles with, “It’s only ok if we do it.”

Many swamp creatures, especially on the left, criticized Swift mercilessly regarding where she stands politically. These leftist snowflakes screamed that she should take some sort of stance, and produce a statement loudly proclaiming her political leaning. Right wingers rightfully claim that all the slander violates her civil right to privacy. One would think that the same rule would apply to Steven Tyler. His response makes it very clear that he does not wish to be involved in politics.

Those who degrade the singer for his choice also conveniently forget their demands that celebrities stay out of politics. They stress that celebrities are meant to entertain us, not lecture us politically. These people should be reminded of this. They need to be aware that it is precisely what Steven Tyler is doing. People must make up their minds. Do they want celebrities involved in politics, or do they not?

Tyler’s Response

Steven Tyler has long been a protagonist for the protection of intellectual property, otherwise known as copyright protections. This, in addition to his stance on remaining apolitical, explains his actions better than any article written about it. That protection, in his mind, extends to ensuring that his songs do not show a political preference for anyone. Tyler has never allowed anyone to use his songs for any reason without acquiring his permission. He never wants to have his songs used in conjunction with politics of any sort.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT DEMS VS. REPUB. I DO NOT LET ANYONE USE MY SONGS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. MY MUSIC IS FOR CAUSES NOT FOR POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS OR RALLIES. PROTECTING COPYRIGHT AND SONGWRITERS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN FIGHTING FOR EVEN BEFORE THIS CURRENT ADMINISTRATION TOOK OFFICE.

This is the way it should be, and not just with celebrities. Every person, who can claim citizenship, should be allowed privacy in all areas of their lives. They should be able to associate freely with whomever they please. Plenty of very recent photos of the Trumps with Steven Tyler should stop the claim that he is anti-Trump.

It is time that everyone, regardless of political affiliation, understands that you cannot trust anything you read without verifying it thoroughly. We are considered a nation of, “innocent until proven guilty.” Steven Tyler’s own words should be enough to calm and soothe everyone, though he should not have to.

As a society, we should all be on the same page when it comes to celebrities. We, as Republicans, have been disgusted with the way Hollywood has shown so much hatred towards Trump, and his supporters in the last two years. We have seen some of the most beloved celebrities get involved politically. They have shown us their true colors. It has been stomach churning. Millions of people have decided to boycott movies because of it. If there are ones like Steven Tyler and Taylor Swift, who wish to stay out of the political fray, it should be welcomed and respected.
