The Acosta Rules: ‘If He Misbehaves We’ll Throw Him Out’

Jim Acosta is Back in the White House

After being kicked out of the White House press room for over a week, Jim Acosta is back in the fold, today. CNN and Acosta filed suit against the Trump Administration for ‘wrongfully’ stripping him of his hard press pass to give him entrance into White House press briefings. A federal judge, who happened to be a Trump appointee, ruled that the White House must reinstate Acosta’s pass on the grounds that it was violating his Fifth Amendment rights. CNN and Acosta have touted this as a huge victory in Trump’s dreamed ‘war of the press,’ but in all reality it is simply a call for the administration to develop rules of decorum for the press pool.

President Trump Fires Back

In an upcoming interview (linked below) with Chris Wallace of Fox News, President Trump responded directly to the ruling by the judge. In epic Trump fashion, the President generally brushes off the ruling and discusses how they’ll handle rowdy journalists going forward. “We have to create rules and regulations for conduct, etcetera, etcetera. We’re doing it, we’re going to write them up right now,” said President Trump, “It’s not a big deal, and if he misbehaves we’ll throw him out or we’ll stop the news conference.” White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, additionally chimed in earlier today, “In response to the court, we will temporarily reinstate the reporter’s hard pass. We will also further develop rules and processes to ensure fair and orderly press conferences in the future. There must be decorum at the White House.”

What Will This Mean for Press Conferences with President Trump?

Whether the White House reporters and journalists love President Trump or hate him, they can’t deny that he has been one of the most accessible Presidents ever. He consistently does press events and takes on all questions with his very unique style of delivery. So will that change? Very possibly. This new set of rules will no doubt regulate the tone and tenor of the press corps. If overzealous reporters decided to over step their lines of decorum, President Trump has made it clear that he will simply end the press conference. This will greatly stifle the availability of the President for questions. The hope from the White House, however, is that this will force the press corps to police themselves. If two dozen reporters get left out of questioning because political activists posing as journalists act like fools and prematurely end the presser, change will undoubtedly happen. The other, more sensible journalists and reporters will shut down such foolishness very quickly. It will be finally hitting them in their wallets or purses. President Trump is smart. He’s going to require them to either play nice or be destroyed internally. Both are a win for this political chess master we like to call President.
